Warehouse

Start the year with a warehouse clear of pallets

After the season, empty pallets pile up. Here is how to sort them, what to do with the broken ones and how to turn the spare ones into space and savings.

Once the Christmas season is over, many warehouses look the same: columns of empty pallets on the loading docks, in the aisles and in every free corner. They take up space, get in the way and, if left outdoors, deteriorate. January is a good time to put things in order.

Why you should not let pallets pile up

  • They take up useful space that you need for goods and for manoeuvring forklifts.
  • They are a safety risk: tall, unstable stacks can fall over, and stockpiled wood is combustible material.
  • They lose value: rain and damp rot the wood, so a pallet that can be repaired today may be beyond repair tomorrow.

1. Sort the pallets into three groups

First of all, go through them quickly and classify them:

  1. Good: no broken boards or loose blocks. You can reuse them or sell them.
  2. Repairable: missing a board or with a damaged block. After a repair they can go back to work.
  3. Beyond repair: the wood is rotten or split into several pieces. Time to recycle them.

2. Keep only the ones you will use

Work out how many pallets you need for the next few weeks and store them under cover, in stable stacks and away from damp. The rest do not need to keep taking up room in your warehouse.

3. Give them a second life

At Repalsur we collect used pallets from your premises with our own fleet. The good ones go back into circulation, the repairable ones go through our repair workshop and the ones beyond repair are recycled. You get your space back and, depending on the condition of the pallets, some money too.

And if you need pallets later on, repairing them or buying second-hand pallets costs less than buying new ones, and it is also better for the environment: every pallet that is repaired is a pallet that does not have to be made.
